Hello! My name is Barb; I am a Registered Psychologist, working with individual adults.  At this time, I only see clients virtually using secure online video software.

Approach to Counselling:

Therapy is a fluid process that requires a flexible approach and to that end I strive to match my methods to each client’s unique needs. I am comfortable being more or less directive in my practice, but I believe firmly in the value of forging a warm connection with my clients and in the maxim of “lead by following”.  Most people facing challenges in their life can tell you what they should do - but the issue is getting there! It is rewarding and affirming to help clients reframe their struggles and find resources within to make the changes they envision for themselves.

My specific approach to counselling is eclectic; however, I always work from a client-centred lens. Depending on where the client is at in their process, I often draw on psychoeducation and cognitive-behavioural perspectives in the initial phases of therapy.  Later in the process, particularly when working more directly with past traumatic events, I often incorporate somatic approaches to help clients process its impact.

Education and Credentials:

  • Registered Psychologist (#1367) with the College of Alberta Psychologists
  • B.Sc. in Honours Psychology from the University of Alberta
  • M.Sc. in Psychology from the University of Alberta
  • Ph.D. in Counselling Psychology from the University of Alberta

Background / Experience:

In the initial years of practice, I  focused my career in the domain of forensic assessment and completed presentence psychological assessments at a community-based forensic clinic and at the Alberta Hospital Forensics Unit.  Eight years later, I shifted my career focus and trained as a therapist, completing a doctoral degree in counselling psychology.  My experience to that point led me to realize how frequently traumatic events in childhood shaped clients’ later life events.  While completing my doctoral program, I specialized in treating traumatic stress and related mental health issues, including PTSD, depression, general anxiety, substance abuse issues and eating disorders.

After completing my doctoral degree, I accepted the position of Director of Student Counselling Services at University of Alberta. Subsequently, I moved on to be the Director of Clinical Services at the Sexual Assault Centre, focusing on a therapy practice with clients who had experienced sexual trauma.  After several years, I returned to assessment and was employed with Edmonton Public Schools as a consultant, conducting psychoeducational assessments in the school system for students in all grade levels.

In 2003,  I was offered a position with the Department of National Defence,  Operational Trauma Support Services Clinic at Edmonton Garrison, which provided me with the opportunity for a combined practice, providing clinical assessments as well as therapy to Canadian military members presenting with combat-related traumatic stress and other mental health issues.

I established my full-time private practice in 2007, offering assessment and counselling services. In my clinical practice, I primarily provide psychoeducational assessments for clients ages four to adulthood who are struggling with learning disorders, ADHD or emotional/behavioural issues. I also complete assessments for military veterans, but no longer do forensic assessments or court-related work.  I view assessment as an opportunity to provide clients with insightful information into their challenges and their strengths, along with practical strategies to move forward.

In my counselling practice, I offer online counselling sessions for clients ages 18 and over, with a particular interest in treating trauma-related issues. Despite the inherently distressing nature of trauma-related issues, I continue to be inspired by the resiliency and resourcefulness of clients and I am honoured to be part of their healing journey.
