Why are Multi-Disciplinary Services Important for Children with Learning Difficulties?

  • Among children between the ages of 7-11 years diagnosed with specific learning disorder (SLD), 62.75% had one or more co-morbid mental health diagnoses (Buber et al., 2020)
  • Around 45% of children diagnosed with a specific learning disorder were also diagnosed with ADHD (Dupaul et al., 2020)
  • Approximately 70% of students who have a specific learning disorder also experience heightened levels of anxiety symptoms compared to students without SLD (Nelson J.M., & Harwood H., 2011)
  • Around 8.8-10.8% of children diagnosed with specific learning disorders experience depression (Khodeir, M.S., El-Sady, S.R. & Mohammed, H.A.ER., 2020)
  • Around 50% of children diagnosed with dyslexia also have a developmental language disorder (Adlof, S.M., & Hogan, T.P., 2018)
  • It is estimated that 28-40% of children with a speech sound disorder or speech language impairment also have a learning disorder (Smiths S, Pennington B, Boada R, Shriberg, 2005; Snowling M, Bishop DVM, Stothard SE, 2000)
  • One study found that 49.8% of individuals 15 years old and older with a learning disability reported they were bullied when they were in school (Greenham, S. L., 1999)
