Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder that is characterized by differences in (1) social communication and (2) restricted and/or repetitive patterns of behaviour. Individuals with ASD can also demonstrate differences in cognitive abilities (ranging from very strong to under-developed), motor skills, speech-language skills, attentional capacity, self-help skills, and mental health. The term “spectrum” means that all individuals with ASD present differently, each with their own unique strengths and challenges. Therefore, the assessment of ASD is a complex process.
