Mental Health Assessments

Mental Health Evaluations/IME Assessments

Mental health difficulties are relatively common in children, adolescents, and adults. In fact, according to the Canadian Mental Health Association, by the age of 40, 50% of the population will have or have had a mental illness.

In the past few years, mental health issues have become increasingly prominent in children, which is concerning as they will often act out behaviorally when they are struggling with mental health challenges.

Identifying mental health difficulties and providing treatment options is critical to receiving therapeutic outcomes. Untreated mental health issues often result in severe impairments academically, occupationally, and emotionally. In addition, without appropriate treatment, mental health issues can result in further diagnoses or impairment, such as developing substance abuse problems.

In most cases, a mental health evaluation, either on its own or as part of a psychoeducational assessment, is recommended for individuals struggling with mental health issues. A mental health assessment can include comprehensive interviews, behavioural questionnaires, personality inventories, cognitive testing, and an academic assessment. The reason such a comprehensive assessment is recommended is because mental health challenges can sometimes be a result of learning or cognitive limitations. However, we can also conduct a less comprehensive mental health evaluation at a lower cost by not including cognitive or academic testing.
