Giftedness generally refers to individuals with an exceptionally high aptitude in intellect, academic achievement, leadership and/or artistic abilities. Children and adults who are gifted intellectually and academically tend to:
- Learn things quickly
- Be fascinated by uncommon topics
- Be skilled at language-based tasks
- Be intensely curious
As a result of their abilities, gifted individuals often require different challenges in school or work. Programs exist for children and adolescents in Edmonton and surrounding areas to support these needs. For example, Edmonton Public Schools has the Academic Challenge (AC) program for high-achieving students. Several charter and private schools cater to gifted students, including New Horizons in Sherwood Park.
The assessment required to identify gifted students generally involves a comprehensive intellectual assessment and academic testing. The cut-off scores to identify gifted students varies from program to program; however, MENSA defines intellectual giftedness as a score in the 98th percentile or higher on a standardized test of intelligence.
