Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) impacts an individual’s ability to regulate focus and maintain attention. It can also result in challenges with restlessness, organization, and impulsive behaviour.
As with Learning Disorders, ADHD can contribute to significant learning, social, and occupational challenges. Identifying and treating ADHD at a young age is critical, as children with ADHD often struggle in the classroom. It is common for individuals with ADHD to underperform academically. They may also experience additional mental health challenges, such as anxiety, low self-esteem, and depression.
Although ADHD is considered a life-long disorder, there are numerous behavioural and medical interventions that are effective in managing the symptoms of ADHD.
A comprehensive assessment with Clarity Psychology is generally recommended for individuals suspected of having ADHD, which includes interviews, behavioural questionnaires, cognitive testing, and an academic assessment.
Although you can diagnose ADHD using a less intensive assessment, the impact that ADHD can have on functioning and educational/occupational performance cannot be understated. As such, examining as many aspects of functioning as possible helps to provide a complete picture of how ADHD is impacting an individual and will also help with treatment recommendations and supports.
